Before it was incorporated as a city, Newcastle was an unincorporated area that went by “Newport Hills.” This name was adopted during the 1960s, when suburban development was in full swing around the region and the community’s days as a mining town were long behind it.
The name was changed back to Newcastle during the city’s incorporation in 1994 to prevent confusion with the Newport Hills neighborhood of Bellevue, which was formerly a portion of the developed Newport Hills suburb.

The Issaquah School District and Renton School District both serve the Newcastle area. There are three schools within city limits, namely, Newcastle Elementary School (Issaquah School District) and Hazelwood Elementary and Risdon Middle School (Renton School District).
