Issaquah is a city located in King County, Washington, bordered by the majestic Issaquah Alps to the south and the Sammamish Plateau on its north. The city encompasses an area of roughly 11 square miles, and is currently home to approximately 30,000 residents.

In its earlier days, the Issaquah area was named “Squak” by homesteaders, which was their pronunciation of “Is-qu-ah,” a local native American name. It had multiple meanings, including “little stream,” and “snake,” although some said it referred to the sounds of northern cranes populating the swamps, creeks, and boggy terrain of the valley. After the area transitioned into a small mining town in the 1800s, its citizens changed its name to “Gilman” after Daniel Gilman, an attorney and railroad builder who established the Seattle Coal and Iron Company in the area. The town of Gilman was officially incorporated as a city in 1892, and was later on renamed to Issaquah in 1899 by the Washington State Legislature.

Today, the city of Issaquah is a terrific place for visitors and residents alike. Nestled in a picturesque valley on the southern edge of Lake Sammamish, Issaquah is a gateway for the majestic Issaquah Alps, making it a popular destination for countless hikers, paragliders, climbers, and outdoor lovers of all ages.

It’s family-friendly environment, scenic surroundings, and high quality of life all combine to make it one of the most livable cities in Washington today.
